4 Signs It’s Time for a Nature Fix

Every time I go to Montana with my husband I’m reminded how essential it is that I spend time in nature. There’s just so much more space up there in the mountains and away from the everyday demands of our son, our jobs, and our furbabies. Of course I love all of those things, but sometimes daily life can feel like A LOT.

Sound familiar?  Maybe life feels a little bit noisy. Or it seems like you’re running on autopilot, juggling work, family, and a seemingly endless list of “to-dos”.

If that’s the case, a nature break might be just what you need to reconnect, recharge, and refocus.

4 Signs It’s Time For a Nature Vacation

Sign # 1 You Need a Nature Vacation: Life Feels Noisy

Whether it’s the traffic sounds of the city or the nonstop hum of to-do lists in your head, life can get loud. Sometimes it feels like a constant buzzing, with your thoughts bouncing around like a crowded room of people talking all at once.

Nature offers the opposite experience: the soothing sound of a creek, the breeze in the trees, or just the quiet that lets your mind finally exhale. If your life is “noisy” from all the runnin’ and gunnin’ you do on a regular basis, a peaceful spot in nature might be just what you need to escape the mental – or actual – clamor.

Sign # 2 You Need a Nature Vacation: Your Phone Feels Like an Extension of Your Hand

When was the last time you weren’t connected? Even a few hours away from notifications and the temptation to scroll can be surprisingly freeing.

On my most recent trip to Montana, our cabin had limited Wi-Fi, and the creek nearby was completely out of range. Not only did this mini “digital detox” help me reconnect with my surroundings, but it also gave me a break from my phone—and reminded me how often I instinctively reach for it. By limiting our connection to places other than where we are, nature allows us to experience the world directly instead of through a screen.

Nature often limits our connection, allowing us to experience the world directly instead of through a screen.

Also, while we all know it’s beneficial to disconnect from social media, there’s something powerful about not having access to instant answers, too. For example, when we were hiking in Montana, I was curious about a type of bird and the type of berry bush we passed. I recognized how quickly I went to Google it, but since we didn’t have service, I just had to sit without knowing the answer.

Sign # 3 You Need a Nature Vacation: You Feel Like Something’s Missing, But You Can’t Quite Pinpoint It

If you know you love trees and green spaces and wildlife, then you probably already recognize when your soul needs a nature reboot. But if you’re not sure you’re “outdoorsy”, you just know that something is lacking in your life, you need a nature fix, too.

Nature can be the ideal place to find clarity. Away from the distractions of daily life, you can tap into your thoughts without the rush of everyday demands. There’s something about the stillness and simplicity of nature that gives you room to sort through your thoughts and connect with yourself on a deeper level. And you don’t have to remain still to have this experience. I often find there’s a certain part of a hike when I zone and my brain goes into autopilot as I step through the roots and the rocks, and that’s when I’m able to uncover deeper truths because I have the time and space.

So, if there’s a nagging feeling you can’t place, try a weekend outdoors. Whether it’s hiking, camping, or simply sitting by a river, rely on the change in setting to clear your mind and uncover what you need.

Sign #4 You Need a Nature Vacation: Being in Nature Is a Rare Thing for You

If hiking, camping, or outdoor adventures aren’t your usual vacation style, this might be the perfect time to change that. If the thought of sitting beside a creek, watching the birds, or identifying the plants around you sounds strange, that’s all the more reason to give it a try. Even a day trip to a nearby park or beach could be transformative if you’re open to it. Nature has a way of grounding us, even if we’re a little out of our element at first.
